MiHoYo, also commonly referred to as HoYoverse, is well known for its gacha games, like Genshin Impact. These games span across continents, reaching well over 60 million monthly players. However, the company itself is referenced as either MiHoYo or HoYoverse, which can become confusing, leaving you to wonder if the two companies are the same thing or if MiHoYo changed its name to HoYoverse.

PostsGiven how most games outside of China are likely to launch with the HoYoverse name, it’s a fair question to wonder about. However, the blame for the difference can be pinned on global publishing and business ventures, rather than a simple name change.
Did MiHoYo Change Its Name To HoYoverse?
MiHoyo did not change its name to HoYoverse, but the two are more-or-less the same. MiHoYo is the parent company, mainly publishing its gacha games in China. However, for global measures, MiHoYo created a global publishing subsidiary, HoYoverse.
HoYoverse handles the global publishing and global business, running conventions, events, and even the daily check-in websites. However, HoYoverse did not always exist, even when MiHoYo started to venture into global publishing.
First, MiHoYo created Cognosphere, setting it up in Singapore as a way to try to get around China’s strict publishing regulations.
Are All MiHoYo Games Published Under HoYoverse?
Any game that MiHoYo wants to be globally published will go through HoYoverse first, now that HoYoverse is firmly established.
As it stands now, there are eight MiHoYo games, five of which are explicitly published under the Cognosphere and HoYoverse label.
- Honkai Impact 3rd
- Tears of Themis
- Genshin Impact
- Honkai: Star Rail
- Zenless Zone Zero
What About Cognosphere?
The disappearance of Cognosphere can actually be blamed on a name change. Cognosphere was originally set up in 2021 in Singapore as one of MiHoYo’s first forays into global publishing. However, in 2022, HoYoverse basically became the new global publishing and promotion subsidiary for MiHoYo.
Of course, you might be wondering how that’s possible when Genshin Impact technically launched in the United States in 2020, but it really just boils down to complicated global business reasons.
While MiHoYo might have originally released Genshin Impact through the primary company, with large games that grow exponentially, it becomes much easier to manage them when you have a subsidiary that can oversee most of the day-to-day work.
