But which one do you think is the most popular? Most of you would probably answer Thor, and you'd be right. In addition to being charismatic and popular, Thor is an incredibly effective god in Age of Mythology: Retold. If you're ready, we’ve prepared some strategy tips for you.

Thor Overview

Thor's focus is on Dwarves and the Armory. Unlike other Norse gods, when playing as Thor, you should use the dwarves more diversely. In other Norse gods' playstyles, dwarves excel at mining gold but are weak in gathering food and wood. However, this isn't the case when playing as Thor. This means you can use dwarves for all resource gathering tasks.

Additionally, since each dwarf costs ten less gold to produce, they are cheaper to train. However, if you're struggling with gold, you might consider producing Gatherers instead.

Another feature that sets Thor apart from other Norse gods is the Dwarven Armory. This is a unique type of armory exclusive to Thor. While other Norse gods can only build the Armory in the second age, you can construct Dwarven Armory in the first age. Furthermore, as long as your economy is strong, you can research all the upgrades without being limited by age restrictions.

What further distinguishes Thor’s Dwarven Armory is that each time you research an upgrade, you receive a free dwarf. There are a total of 16 upgrades available, meaning you can obtain 16 free dwarves. While this might not seem as powerful as some of Thor’s other abilities, considering the cost of dwarves, acquiring all 16 of them will save you from spending 800 gold.

Thor's final feature is that he has three extra upgrades in the Dwarven Armory, which are quite powerful research upgrades:

Upgrade

Description

Hammer of Thor

Increases the damage of your Hersirs and boosts their favor generation rate. Unlocking this early will give you an advantage in producing myth units.

Dwarven Weapons

Increases the attack of all human units, heroes, ships, and buildings. You can think of this upgrade as the equivalent of acquiring the Iron Weapons upgrade twice.

Meteoric Iron Armor

Increases the defense of all human units, heroes, ships, and buildings against hack attacks. This upgrade is equivalent to acquiring the Iron Armor upgrade twice, but note that it won't protect you against pierce attacks.

Thor's god power is the Dwarven Mine, which creates a gold mine at a location of your choice on the map. This god power is very useful since resources become scarce toward the end of the game, and you can place it in a safe location. Moreover, the gold mine created by Thor contains more gold and is mined faster if used in later ages, so it's not a good idea to use it too early.

Minor God Choices

The type of army you want to build, along with your opponent's army weaknesses, will determine which Minor Gods you should choose. That's why it's essential to be familiar with the bonuses provided by each Minor God:

Minor God

Description

Freyja

Freyja’s god power, Forest Fire, can be useful in the late game for economically crippling your opponent. However, the effectiveness of this god power depends on the abundance and proximity of forests on the map. For example, on maps like Muspellheim, where forests are sparse and far apart, it will be ineffective. Valkyries are expensive units, but if you upgrade them to Shieldmaiden Valkyries with Disablot, they will be worth it. Since Norse armies need to be mobile and offensive, you’ll want to include Valkyries in your army. If you’re planning to build a cavalry-heavy army, the Thundering Hooves upgrade will be very useful.

Forseti

Forseti's Healing Spring allows friendly units to heal. However, you should place it in a safe area early in the game to prevent enemy forces from capturing it. Additionally, Trolls are effective ranged myth units. If you don't plan on choosing Baldr in the final age, Trolls will be your only ranged myth unit. The Dwarven Breastplate upgrade increases the hack attack resistance of your Hirdmen and Berserkers by 20%, which is a significant boost.

Skadi

Skadi’s god power, Frost, is highly effective both defensively and offensively. It temporarily immobilizes your opponent's army, giving you a chance to eliminate key enemy buildings during a siege. You can also use Frost Giants to freeze powerful individual enemy units. However, make sure to unlock the Rime research upgrade to further increase the stats of your Frost Giants. The Huntress’ Axe upgrade improves the range and accuracy of your Throwing Axemen, who are among the most effective Norse infantry units. Lastly, Winter Harvest is an excellent economic upgrade that boosts your villagers' farming speed by 20%.

Bragi

If your goal is to finish off your opponent quickly with an offensive strategy, Bragi is a good choice. Battle Boars are effective at destroying buildings and scattering enemy armies. With Flaming Weapons, you can temporarily increase your army's attack power, dealing devastating damage to enemy forces. Call of Valhalla is insignificant if you don’t have or prioritize Berserkers, as the ability to recover one favor when they die is not highly impactful. The Swine Array upgrade is useful if you have a Hirdmen-heavy army, allowing you to more quickly defeat enemy cavalry.

Baldr

Ragnarok is your last chance to either launch a sudden final attack or strengthen your defense. However, keep in mind that using this god power will halt your economy, so you must plan carefully before activating it. Fire Giants are among the most powerful myth units, but they are quite expensive. Sons of Sleipnir will make your cavalry-heavy army even deadlier, and with Dwarven Auger, you can increase the attack power of your Portable Rams by 20%, enabling them to quickly destroy buildings.

Tyr

The 'Fimbulwinter' god power is effective at crippling your opponent's defenses during an attack, or at weakening them if they are attacking you. The wolves summoned by this power can be helpful, but you shouldn’t rely solely on it. Fenris Wolf Brood units are inexpensive, but their strength increases with numbers, so you need to produce many of them to make them effective. The Berserkgang upgrade gives your Berserkers 35% healing while they attack, making them harder to kill. Additionally, Huskarls gain a significant 20% attack bonus, making them even more deadly.

General Tips

Balance Your Dwarves And Gatherers

Your dwarves are just as effective as your gatherers when it comes to collecting resources, not just mining gold. The fact that you can train them for only 50 gold is also a great advantage. If you have an abundance of gold but are low on food, don't hesitate to send your dwarves to gather other resources.

Conversely, if you're low on gold and have plenty of food, send your gatherers to handle the other resource collection tasks.

Strengthen Your Army Early By Upgrading Your Armory

While other gods can only get research upgrades in specific ages, Thor has the ability to quickly complete all upgrades in the early ages. This gives you a significant advantage over your opponent’s army. Therefore, it's best not to play overly defensively. Remember, Norse gods earn favor through battle, so constantly raiding your enemy will be in your advantage.

Make sure to upgrade your army as soon as possible, and prioritize the Meteoric Iron Armor and Dwarven Weapons upgrades to further boost your army’s strength and defense. Keep in mind that only Thor has access to these upgrades, so be sure to take advantage of them.

Earn Extra Favor With Hammer Of Thunder

Hammer of Thunder is another research upgrade unique to Thor. It’s not only cheap and effective, but learning it in the early ages will be very beneficial. Since Hersirs play a key role in generating favor, you’ll want to maximize their potential.

With Hammer of Thunder, you’ll increase their attack power and double their favor generation. This will allow you to train more myth units and use god powers more frequently. So, make sure to have a considerable number of Hersirs in your army.
