Here's a brief primer to learning the ins and outs of Age of Mythology: Retold.
PostsThe key to victory lies in advancing through the ages as swiftly as possible and learning powerful units and effective research upgrades. So, how do you advance through the ages? How can your civilization, starting from the Archaic Age, reach the Mythic Age under the guidance of your chosen god? You’ll find the answers in this guide.
What Does Advancing To The Next Age Do?
There are five ages in the game, and you start in the first one, the Archaic Age. In first age, your main tasks are producing workers, gathering resources, and scouting the map. There isn’t much else you can do. To unlock new units, god powers, and research upgrades, you need to advance to the next age.
Advancing to the next age will allow you to improve your settlement and gain access to more offensive units. When advancing to the next age, you’ll be given two minor god options depending on your pantheon and major god choice.
The selected minor god will grant you a god power, unlock new myth units from the Temple, allow workers to build new structures, and provide access to important upgrades.
How to Advance To The Next Age
There are two conditions you must meet before advancing to the next age. You need to construct the building required for the next age and gather the necessary resources. Once you've fulfilled these conditions, the circular icon at the top of the game's interface showing your current age will begin to blink.
Select your Town Center and choose the ‘Advance to the Next Age’ option from the bottom left of the screen. This will present you with two minor gods to choose from. After making your selection, you will need to wait a brief period, and then you’ll successfully advance to the next age.
The cost to advance to the next age is the same for every pantheon and god. Here’s what you’ll need to proceed to the next age:
Next Age
Required Building
Resource Cost
Time
Classical Age
- Temple
400 Food
60 second
Heroic Age
- Armory
800 Food and 500 Gold
60 second
Mythic Age
- Fortress (Greek)
- Migdol Stronghold (Egyptian)
- Hill Fort (Norse)
- Palace (Atlantean)
1,000 Food and 1,000 Gold
90 second
When advancing to the next Age, remember that you cannot train workers or perform other upgrades from the Town Center. However, if you have multiple Town Centers, you can use your other Town Centers to continue these actions.
How to Advance To The Wonder Age
Players can also reach the fifth and final age, known as the Wonder Age. However, the process of reaching this age is different from advancing to other ages. To do so, players must first reach the Mythic Age and then construct a Wonder. The cost for the Wonder is as follows:
- 5,000 Food
- 5,000 Wood (Egyptians do not need to pay Wood)
- 5,000 Gold (Egyptians need to pay 7500 Gold instead)
Once you’ve gathered the necessary resources, you can initiate the construction of the Wonder. Be prepared, though, as this process will take a considerable amount of time due to its sheer scale. It’s important to protect your Wonder while it's being built, as losing it during construction can delay or even ruin your strategy to reach the Wonder Age.
Once the Wonder is successfully built, you’ll advance to the fifth and final age. However, it’s important to note that many games might conclude before there’s a need to reach the Wonder Age. Also, remember that you can only construct one Wonder per game.
What Are The Differences In The Wonder Age?
The Wonder Age functions differently from other ages. First, despite advancing to this age, you won’t be offered a choice of minor gods, which means you won’t receive a new god power. Also, since you don’t select a minor god, you won’t have access to new technologies, research upgrades, or other bonuses.
If your Wonder is destroyed, you will revert back to the Mythic Age.
What makes the Wonder Age unique are the ongoing beneficial effects that you can enjoy while you remain in this age. These effects include:
- You gain one favor per second.
- The favor cost of your god powers is reduced by 75 percent, and their cooldown is reduced by 75 percent.
- The attack and hitpoints of your myth units and titans are doubled, and they gain 20 percent additional movement speed.
- You can rebuild the Titan Gate. However, after casting it, you’ll need to wait an additional 10 minutes to do so again.
