As you may have gathered by now, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth is a game that doesn't really care about being in chronological order. The fourth episode, Turnabout Reminiscence is named quite well - this case takes place far in the past, during Edgeworth's training to be a prosecutor under the tutelage of Manfred von Karma.

Also getting some attention in this case are Franziska von Karma and Gumshoe, with this episode giving us a great insight into what their relationships with Edgeworth were like back in the day. Don't worry, there's also a grizzly mystery to solve, and we have all the solutions below.

Beginning: The Court House

As this case doesn't begin with a murder or a mystery, we don't technically begin with an official investigation to speak of. However, we do have some things we need to do to progress.

Begin by speaking to Manfred to learn about today's trial and its history. Checking out the KG-8 Incident Overview file is a good idea when it's added to your case files. The scenes that follow your conversations with Manfred will have you meeting Kay and then discovering the big tragedy of the episode.

When you regain control in the hallway, speak to everyone there - the detective with the long coat, the defence lawyer in blue, and good ol' Detective Gumshoe.

After the conversations, you'll be ready to start the first proper investigation of the episode.

Investigation: Defendant Lobby No. 2

Begin this investigation by examining the bodies. Examine the following points:

  • The gun.
  • The knife.
  • The bloody evidence bag.
  • Both men's faces.
  • The clenched hand of the man on top.

Examining everything will lead to another examination with the bodies moved. In this new scene, examine the following points:

  • The pocket pen.
  • The knife wound.
  • The bullet wound.

With that done, you can examine the rest of the room. Look at the table on the bottom side of the room, the open window at the back, and the big television on the right.

This is all the evidence you need before you start making logical deductions.

Logic Combination

Ink stain

+

Fountain pen in pocket

Neat and tidy table

+

Plastic bags strewn about

Making these combinations will prompt you to make a deduction with the bodies to point out a contradiction. Deduce the gun in Faraday's hand and present Mr. Faraday's Fountain Pen as evidence of a contradiction. This will end the investigation and lead directly to a confrontation with Franziska.

Cross-Examination: What Happened

  1. Press the third statement: "And Mr. Rell, while on the brink of death, stole Mr. Faraday's knife and stabbed him."
  2. Present Det. Gumshoe's Testimony at the new statement: "They struggled, and Mr. Rell used the last of his strength to counterattack Mr. Faraday."
  3. State that something is off and present the Crime Scene Notes as evidence.
  4. Assert that the contradiction is the order the bodies fell.

Cross-Examination: What Happened, Pt. 2

  1. Press the third statement: "...which indicates that they attacked each other at the same time."
  2. Present the Handgun at the new statement: "That fact indicates that they attacked each other at the same time from close range."
  3. State that neither man attacked first.
  4. To prove the existence of a third person, present the Plastic Bag.

In the ensuing scenes, ask Gumshoe about the possible motive for the murders. This gives you the next cross-examination.

Cross-Examination: Gumshoe's Motive

  1. Press the fifth statement: "Well? How's that for the "perfect explanation"?"
  2. Raise an objection.
  3. State that there's no motive for killing Mr. Rell.

Cross-Examination: Motive To Kill The Men

  1. Present the KG-8 Incident Overview at the first statement: "There's no one out there with a motive to kill both Mr. Faraday and Mr. Rell."

After the ensuing scenes, you'll gain control again. Talk to Calisto Yew about the KG-8 Incident and then present her with the KG-8 Incident Overview to unlock some more dialogue options - you must do this in this specific order. When asked, state that she is connected to the incident through the victim.

After the break and the scenes with Manfred, talk to Yew and Gumshoe about every option they have. You'll need to talk to Yew first before Gumshoe will calm down enough to chat. After exhausting Gumshoe's dialogue options, present him with Det. Gumshoe's Testimony to proceed.

After the short cutscene, follow a young Kay Faraday into the hallway to the left. This starts the next stage of the episode.

Investigation: Hallway

Begin this investigation by talking to the Judge and then Detective Badd about every option they have. When prompted to ask more about the gunshot with Badd, ask about the time he heard it.

With the conversations over, it's time to investigate. Take a look at the following:

  • The bench on the left.
    • On the upper screen, examine the pink piece of trash on the shelf and the cactus.
    • On the lower screen, examine the pile of crumbs on the floor and the handprint on the bench.
  • The vending machine.

With this done, make some easy deductions:

Logic Combination

Swiss roll crumbs

+

Vending machine

Pink piece of trash

+

Windowsill cactus

After the discussion, return to the vending machine and hit the Deduce button over the Swiss Rolls panel and present the Annual Bonus Envelope as evidence of a contradiction.

With that, the investigation is complete, and it's time to confront a major character.

Cross-Examination: What I Saw At Recess

  1. Present Det. Gumshoe's Fingerprints at the fourth statement: "But when I was about the exit the restroom, he had completely disappeared!"

Cross-Examination: What I Saw At Recess, Pt. 2

  1. Press the second statement: "However, that doesn't mean that the Detective was sitting there when I looked!"
  2. Present Det. Badd's Testimony at the new statement: "Let's see, I looked into that hallway about 20 minutes before we were to reconvene."
  3. Assert that what he really heard was a balloon popping by presenting the Balloon Piece.

Cross-Examination: While I Was On Duty

  1. Press the third statement: "From that time on, until I heard the gunshot, I was in that hallway the whole time!"
  2. Present the Swiss Roll at the new statement: "And until I heard the gunshot, I didn't take a single step away from the Lobby No. 2 door."
  3. To prove someone else being in the hallway, present the Swiss Roll again.

This will end the cross-examination and give you a chance to chat with Kay. Talk to her about every option you get after presenting her with the Swiss Roll. Then, to prove that Gumshoe was lying, present the Promise Notebook.

After a few scenes, you'll regain control in Defendant Lobby No. 1. Talk to Badd about everything here. This series of events will lead you back to the courtroom. Examine the evidence on the benches to the left, taking a closer look at each individual piece when prompted.

When asked to show evidence of how the knife was brought into the courthouse, present the Yatagarasu's Key. Examine the button on the bottom of the knife when taking a closer look at it.

The following scenes will have you confronting Detective Badd. Talk to him and present him with the Yatagarasu's Key before asking about the time of the murder. This will begin a cross-examination.

Cross-Examination: Det. Badd's Movements

  1. Press the third statement: "...I heard the gunshot... right before the trial was about the reconvene."
  2. Present the Balloon Piece at the new statement: "...I didn't hear any other strange sounds... until that gunshot..."

You'll get forced into making the following logical connections:

Logic Combination

Lobby No. 2 window

+

Dissipating the smell

Very loud television

+

Open windows

Gunshot could be heard

+

Missing evidence

This will put you into a special, short investigation.

Examine the video player underneath the television screen, and then Deduce the open window and use the Surveillance Video as evidence.

State that the killer wanted to manipulate the perception of when the crime took place to complete the investigation. This will take you to the final stretch, which consists of a few complex cross-examinations.

Cross-Examination: Ms. Yew's Argument

  1. Press all four statements.
  2. Explain how the gunshot could be fabricated by presenting the Surveillance Video.
  3. Explain how people could hear the gunshot by saying the window was open.
  4. Assert that the murderer is Calisto Yew.

Cross-Examination: Ms. Yew's Rebuttal

  1. Present Ms. Yew's Perfume at the first statement: "You argue that the window was opened, however, do you have any proof it was I who did that?"

Cross-Examination: Why It Couldn't Be Me

  1. Press the fourth statement: "After all, I don't even know where the knife that was used to kill him came from."
  2. Present the Knife at the new statement: "There was a key in his evidence bag, but you can't kill anyone with a simple key!"
  3. Assert that the person with the knowledge is the Yatagarasu.

This ends the cross-examinations and the case. The final prompt you're given is to provide proof of Kay's friendship; this is, of course, the Swiss Roll.
