Summary

  • The unannounced Death Note game, which will be published by Bandai Namco, has received a rating in Taiwan.
  • Previously, the game was trademarked in June.
  • It's unclear what kind of game Death Note will be, though previous Nintendo DS titles focused on strategy.

If you're like us, and can't get enough anime video games, no matter how bad some of them are (*cough* Black Clover: Quartet Knights), then it looks like you'll be in luck. That's because, after previously being trademarked back in June, a game centered around the iconic Death Note manga has been rated in Taiwan.

As first spotted by Gematsu, the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee, the equivalent to the U.S.'s ESRB or EU's PEGI, the unannounced Death Note game has received ratings for both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The game will apparently be published by Bandai Namco, which handles a large portion of anime games, though a developer isn't mentioned.

Given the trademark, followed by the rating, it would appear that the game is at least inching closer to a potential reveal. Perhaps the most pressing thing is just what kind of game would Death Note even warrant.

Death Note Did Have A Nintendo DS Game

During Death Note's peak, a trio of games were released on the Nintendo DS in Japan. While they never made it past Japan, they could offer a clue to what a console game would look like. Death Note: Kira Game and Death Note: Successor to L were both strategy games, with players tasked with deducing who the enemy is. The third game actually served as a prequel to the manga's events, and played out similarly.

Outside those games, Death Note hasn't had any formal representation in video games. Light and Ryuk were part of 2019's Jump Force, though they were non-playable characters, instead serving as key figures in the game's plot.

Based off that, as hilarious as it would be to have an arena fighter, it's likely that a Death Note game would be focused on strategy elements. Perhaps there is even a lane where the game is a visual novel, similar to how 2022's Digimon Survive ended up playing out. Hopefully, it will be sooner than later that we can find out.
