Summary

  • Skyrim currently has more players than Oblivion Remastered, overtaking it for the first time.
  • Oblivion Remastered's player count has dropped by 82% in one month.
  • Despite the player count drop, Oblivion Remastered remains the fastest-modded game in Nexus Mods' history.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered enjoyed a fine start to life. Despite being one of gaming's worst-ever kept secrets, the shadow-dropped title became one of the best-selling games of the year so far, instantly garnering praise from the gaming world, and a player count that came so close to beating the legendary Skyrim's.

As the saying goes, though, you can't keep a good man down, and right now, The Elder Scrolls IV: Skyrim has more people playing than Oblivion Remastered, a game which has been out for less than a month.

More Players Are Currently Exploring Skyrim Than Cyrodiil

According to SteamDB, as of 7:54 am GMT on Tuesday, 20 March (2:54 am ET/11:54 pm PT), there are 18,001 players playing Skyrim, compared to the Oblivion Remaster, which has 16,735. This represents the first time that Skyrim has overtaken Oblivion Remastered since it launched last month on April 22.

Oblivion Remastered's 24-hour peak player count is just shy of 39,000, an 82 percent drop from last month's highs. It took the original Skyrim six months to drop this low. However, it is roughly holding the same pace as Skyrim's Special Edition did, which was released in October 2016. It does seem like it's only a matter of time before Skyrim's 24-hour peak beats Oblivion Remastered, though, with The Elder Scrolls V maxing out at 36,031 yesterday.

While there is always the argument that single-player games will quickly lose players, this doesn't explain how another single-player game, Skyrim, is doing much better than it, especially now that Oblivion Remastered is officially the fastest-modded game in Nexus Mods history, smashing through 1,000 mods in under seven days.

There's nothing Oblivion Remastered has to worry about, however. Games as vast as this one always ebb and flow, as players complete multiple playthroughs, or simply dip in and out—it's just interesting that Skyrim has reclaimed its title as The Elder Scrolls champion after less than a month. Here's hoping that a couple hundred more players hop into Morrowind to help it break a record that has stood for 12 years now.
