The strange contacts of the Arcane University in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered have led to unusual dynamics of power within the Empire and especially in Skingrad. Count Janus, lord vampire presiding over this major city, acts as the protector of the southern realm and secret confidant of Tamriel's most powerful mages' society.

He trusts few but you, Hero of Kvatch, but his information never comes for free. One should never trust a vampire to give away their hand for nothing, after all. But what lengths would you go to uncover the count's information? What would you give to save the Empire's Arcane University from the machinations of an unknown necromantic cult?

How To Begin The Information At A Price Quest

To begin this quest, you will have to complete all previous Arcane University quests:

  • The Mage's Staff
  • Ulterior Motives
  • Vahtacen's Secret
  • Necromancer's Moon
  • Liberation or Apprehension?

As a Warlock rank mage, you can speak with Archmage Traven at the Arcane University to accept a quest to get information from your old friend, Count Janus of Skingrad.

How To Get The Information From Count Janus Hassildor

Go to Skingrad County Hall and speak with the argonian, Hal-Liurz. She'll leave to inform the count of your arrival. Wait patiently for the count to come down and speak with you.

The Count will ask you to take care of both a group of vampires and a group of vampire hunters. However, you do not need to do this exactly. Instead, you have three choices:

  • Kill both the hunters and the vampires.
  • Help the hunters kill the vampires.
  • Help the vampires kill the hunters.

You can also completely ignore the hunters and kill the vampires yourself, returning to the hunters later to show them a sample of Vampire Dust from the cavern.

Bug Notes

This quest has several bugs to report, especially about dealing with Hal-Lierz and the Count himself:

Bug Name

Bug description

Bug Fix

Endless Spinning

Hal-Lierz can sometimes become stuck at the bottom of the stairs and spin endlessly.

Walk into her, pushing her up one step. She should course-correct.

Count Never Appears

After several minutes of waiting, the Count and Hal-Lierz never appear.

Press the wait button for at least one hour.

Quest Won't Complete

The quest as a whole will not be completed, nor can Janus's dialogue be advanced after killing the vampires and ridding the city of the vampire hunters (in any fashion).

Direct result of taking the Vampire Cure quest. Finishing the Vampire Cure unlocks the stuck Information At A Price quest.

Missing Hunters

The Hunters will not go to the Bloodcrust Cavern, even after telling them where the vampires are.

Sleep until the next calendar day.

Eridor's Bad Memory

The Hunters don't believe you killed the vampires despite having killed the vampires themselves.

Pick up a vampire dust and show it to Eridor to jog his poor memory. Convince him you did it all yourself.

Where Are The Vampire Hunters?

Before you can start making any choices, you will likely want to find the Vampire Hunters first. The easiest one to find is Eridor. He is a bosmer wearing an axe on his back. You can typically find him walking around near the West Gate, around the Great Chapel.

As for the other three, you can either ask Eridor about them or track down their location by heading to the Two Sisters Lodge. Speak with Mog gra-Mogakh. She'll tell you the vampire hunters are staying at the lodge, eating in the afternoon and sleeping near midnight.

The vampire hunters sleep in pairs of two upstairs in the farthest rooms from the door on the north side of the building. Their doors are marked in red and have Hard level locks on them.

How To Kill The Vampire Hunters

The easiest way to kill all four hunters is to attack them at the lodge, where you can get them all together. To assassinate them without arousing too much suspicion, you can:

  • Cast a Frenzy spell on one of them and attack with the other patrons.
  • One-shot kill them in their beds as they sleep.
  • Pickpocket poison apples into their inventories before their midday lunch.

How To Aid The Vampire Hunters

To get the hunters on your side, speak to Eridor and tell him that you have information for him. Point him in the direction of the vampires' location at Bloodcrust Cavern. He'll thank you, and the hunters will set out for that location. Eventually.

Even when you tell the hunters to leave for the cavern, they will not go until the next calendar day.

How To Kill The Vampires

Bloodcrust Cavern is situated on the east side of Skingrad. It's a slightly tricky location to get to on the east side because of the giant cliffs separating the Castle and Eastgate from the entrance. Either you will have to go all the way around the cliffside (taking a tremendous amount of time) or carefully maneuver down the cliffside without falling.

We recommend having a decent Acrobatics skill if you are using the cliffside route.

As you enter the cave, there will be one vampire in the entrance. The entrance splits into two paths, going north and south; which one you take does not matter, as the cave is circular. Defeat all the vampires you see on your way until the cave is empty.

After fighting all these vampires, you might contract Porphyric Hemophilia, which will turn you into a vampire if left untreated. You can get rid of this disease with a Cure Disease potion or spell or by interacting with an altar, which you can do in the Great Chapel of Julianos in Skingrad.

Pick up a sample of vampire dust from any of the vampires inside the cave. If you brought the vampire hunters along, they likely died before the end. However, if they survived or if you didn't bring the hunters along at all, you'll need to speak to Eridor. Tell Eridor the vampires are dead (if he doesn't already believe it himself), and convince the hunters to leave Skingrad.

Information At A Price: Conclusion

Return to Count Janus to inform him that both the vampire hunters and the vampires themselves are gone. Just like last time, you will have to ask Hal-Liurz to bring the count down for you.

Sometimes, Hal-Liurz will leave the County Hall after asking her to retrieve the count. However, the count will still appear from another door as if she had gone up to get him.

After Count Janus tells you about the dreadful return of Mannimarco, travel to the Arcane University and speak with Archmage Traven to tell him all you've learned. You'll complete this quest but receive no reward for doing so. Likewise, you will not yet be able to seek Advancement with Raminus.

For now, go about your journey. You will have to wait for several days before you can speak with Archmage Traven again.

Before taking the next quest, wrap up any quests or sales you would like to complete with the Bruma Mages' Guild. If you have any interest in the Summon Daedra Lord spell as a Conjurer, buy it from Volarno immediately. Likewise, if you wish to invest in every vendor in the game, purchase any goods you covet from Selena Orania before accepting this quest.
