While the Gray Fox's plans are unclear for now, you'll need to trust that your guildmaster has your best interests – and your reward – in mind. While he's tight-lipped about the reason behind these tasks, all will be revealed in time once you help to retrieve the Arrow of Extrication for The Gray Fox.

How To Start The Arrow Of Extrication

Close

Once you've fenced 700 gold or more and completed Turning a Blind Eye, head to the Imperial City and wait.

You'll eventually be approached by Amusei, who will tell you to go to Malintus Ancrus' house in Chorrol, near its southern gate, where you'll meet the Gray Fox for a second time.

This space is much more cramped, so immediately enter conversation with the Gray Fox when you enter and listen to his special plans.

The Gray Fox asks you to bring him the Arrow of Extrication by stealing it from Fathis Aren, who lives in Castle Bravil as its court wizard.

You're even permitted to kill Fathis Aren as long as you don't do it in the castle.

How To Break Into Fathis Aren's Wizard Tower

Close

Fast travel to Bravil, where you'll need to ask one of the beggars for information about Fathis Aren, and you'll learn about his tower and a secret passage to it in the castle.

Enter Castle Bravil and sneak toward the Lord's Manor North Wing door, where you'll see two guards stationed on either side of the door.

Luckily, you can wait for the guard shift to change at around 7:30 am to strike by picking the lock while nobody is around.

Once you're inside, open the average lock on the wooden door to the north and search the room for the Arrow by checking the chests.

These chests won't have the arrow; instead, you'll be prompted to check around for the secret chamber.

Now, approach the movable pillar directly across from the door to find the secret passage to the Bravil Wizard's Grotto, which has a hard lock that must be picked.

Water breathing will be beneficial to have here.

Descend the stairs and kill the Dremora, then break the hard lock on the north gate and follow the path to the right and south so you can eventually progress east.

Once you come to a large chamber with deep water leading to a dead-end cave, you're in the right spot.

Prepare your preferred method of Water Breathing, then dive to the bottom until you find a small hole – enter, kill the slaughterfish boss enemy, and loot it.

After that's done, swim upward while facing north, and eventually you'll see a tunnel through the water that leads upward to land again.

Follow the path east through the gate and open the gate to the northern path where a Dremora is patrolling. Defeat the Dremora and follow the watery tunnel past some Nirnroot and into the Bravil Wizard's Lair once you pick the hard lock.

Sneak up the stairs and follow the southern path upward. Prepare to sneak past some conjurer enemies until you eventually reach the door to Fathis Aren's Tower, which is locked by a hard lock.

How To Get The Arrow Of Extrication

Close

Kill the enemies here as quietly as you can, being careful not to alert Fathis Aren, who is a few floors above you in the ruined tower.

If you're in the Mages Guild, be careful, or you'll be expelled if you kill Fathis or steal from any source other than his chest.

After his guards are quietly dealt with, sneak into Fathis' room while he's busy with his alchemy and loot Fathis Aren's chest, which won't count as stealing and thus won't get you kicked out of the Mages Guild if this is the only thing you take.

Take everything you want from this chest, including the Key-Shaped Arrowhead, then immediately fast travel to Chorrol's South Gate to get out of Fathis' tower.

What Rewards Do You Get From The Arrow Of Extrication?

Return to Malintus Ancrus' house and speak to the Gray Fox, who will reward you with the following:

  • 500 gold
  • The Master Thief title
  • Access to Fathis Ules in the Imperial City as a fence, the final and best fence you'll meet

Now you'll need to fence 800 gold to begin the next quest: Boots Of Springheel Jak.
