The family that slays together stays together.
PostsOne such hidden quest is An Unexpected Voyage, a short quest that starts upon resting at a particular inn. Rent a room inside The Bloated Float, get some rest, and you'll find yourself on a hijacked ship with a small gang of misfits. Convince them to surrender or take them all down yourself. The choice is yours. This guide will cover how to start AN Unexpected Voyage, what each step entails, and cover both outcomes to this fairly short side quest.
How To Start An Unexpected Voyage
CloseAn Unexpected Voyage may be started by sleeping in The Bloated Float Inn, a docked ship you can find in the Waterways district of the Imperial City. There aren't any level requirements or quest prerequisites for this quest; it can be started at any point in your playthrough.
Enter the inn and speak with the innkeeper, Ormil. Rent a room for ten gold and spend the night there. Upon waking up, the ship will be hijacked and immediately start An Unexpected Voyage.
Deal With The Blackwater Brigands
Just outside your room will be Lynch, a member of the tight-knit group who's captured the ship. He'll speak with you once you exit your room. You'll want to probe him for information. Use the following dialogue prompts:
- "Just a passenger."
- "I'm a member of your gang."
- "I'm not going to say."
Lynch's dialogue reveals that he's part of the Blackwater Brigands, a tight-knit gang who've commandeered the Bloated Float in search of profit. You'll need to kill Lynch or find a way to pacify him to continue. Once dealt with, loot Lynch's body to grab his storage unit key. Use it to free Graman Gro-Marad. He can return the ship to Cyrodiil, but you'll need to deal with the rest of the brigands first.
Minx
Make your way upstairs to find Minx, the second member of the gang. As before, you'll want to initiate these specific lines in dialogue to get more information about the heist:
- "Lynch sent me up here."
- "Yes. I'm here to assist."
- "He's dead."
Minx will disclose that Ormil is held hostage by the leader of the group, Selene, somewhere in the boat's cabin. You'll need to clear out the ship first to get Graman back behind the wheel, but you now have an idea of where the captain of the gang is. Kill Minx, take her key, then head to the upper deck of the ship—located upstairs from the bar area.
Wrath
Wrath is the last grunt tied to the operation. As with the previous Blackwater Brigands, he'll ask you what you're doing on the ship. Answer with the following:
- "I'm awaiting orders."
- "Three days ago."
- "Lynch and Minx are dead."
Now you know that they're chasing something called the 'Golden Galleon' and are going to split the profits. You threw a wrench into that plan, so it's best to dispose of Wrath while he's alone. Get rid of the bandit and loot his body for the ship's cabin key. Speak with Graman when you're done to get him behind the wheel.

PostsCapture Or Kill Selene
Before you can return to the Imperial City, you'll need to deal with the leader of the Blackwater Brigands and rescue Ormil. Selene is located in the captain's cabin behind the bar on the main floor. Use the key Wrath had to get inside.
Once you're inside, you have two ways to approach Selene's dialogue:
- Provoke: Get Selene to fight you. This will always be the result of the first dialogue option.
- Subdue: Convince Selene that her efforts are futile. Use the information you gathered earlier to intimidate her to surrender.
Fighting Selene is the easier option. Simply pick the first dialogue option to initiate a fight. Kill Selene, rescue Ormil, then go back to sleep to complete the quest.
Getting Selene To Surrender
Your second option is to get Selene to surrender. Doing so will require you to use all the information you gathered from past conversations to convince her that the heist is over. A high Persuasion stat or Speechcraft skill is not required here. Select the following dialogue options:
- "I took the key from Wrath."
- "I'm here to join the gang."
- "...three months ago?"
- "To find the Golden Galleon."
- "You mean in Bravil?"
If done correctly, Selene will surrender and will temporarily follow you. Take her to the lower deck where your room is. She'll lock herself into the private quarters nearby. Return to the deck and speak with Ormil to wrap up the quest. Return to your bed and sleep for at least an hour.
Now that you're back in the Imperial City, ask Ormil about your reward. He'll inform you that the city has paid a small bounty for Selene. You get the same reward regardless of how you handled the Selene encounter: a small sum of gold. Your character's level determines how much gold you'll receive.
