  • The deluxe edition costs $10 extra and features the aforementioned horse armour, two new armour sets and various weapons themed around Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon.
  • The remastered version of Oblivion includes all the original game's expansions.

Nineteen years after Oblivion's horse armour sparked conversations about excessive monetisation and frivolous downloadable content, Bethesda and Virtuos are giving it another go with the Oblivion Remaster's deluxe edition.

Fans of the series who might've been angry with Horse Armour in 2006 probably remember the whole fiasco fondly, and are unlikely to renew their anger at the cheeky second-coming of gaming's most controversial DLC. As it turns out, Oblivion's original Horse Armour DLC actually sold millions, so the commercial results don't necessarily align with the controversy that surrounded its release.

Horse Armour 2

The Oblivion Remaster's deluxe edition costs an extra $9.99 and includes: two new horse armour sets, new armour sets, new weapons, a digital artbook and a digital soundtrack. The armour, weapons and horse armour are themed around Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon.

Akatosh's armour set, weapons and horse armour are entitled "Order," while Mehrunes Dagon's are called "Cataclysm." The conflict between Dagon and Akatosh is one of the central narrative pillars of Oblivion. From the deluxe edition graphic, the Order set appears to have a battleaxe, warhammer and mace, while the Cataclysm set has a bow, waraxe and another battleaxe.

The original gold and silver horse armour sets from Oblivion are present in the Remaster free-of-charge, so we can all now finally be one of the millions of players who paid $2.50 to keep Prior Maborel's Paint Horse safe from marauding goblins. Shadowmere? Never heard of him.

Regardless of whether you get the deluxe edition or not, the various imps and spriggans of the Great Forest can expect to see the Hero of Kvatch stampeding through the treeline atop a perfectly armoured horse.

The Oblivion Remaster was announced during a dedicated stream, after months of leaks that suggested a shadow drop was imminent. The remaster includes all the original game's expansions, including Knights of the Nine and The Shivering Isles. The game is currently available on Xbox Series X/S, Game Pass, Steam and PlayStation 5.
