No Man's Sky: How To Craft And Use Automated Traps For Fishing

As of the Aquarius update, fishing has come to No Man’s Sky. Now you can take off your spacesuit to bask in the cool waters of your favorite river, lake, or sea, take out your fishing rod, and try to catch the big one. Or, if you’re feeling more industrious than in need of a meditative way to spend the afternoon, you can just automate the whole process with an Automated Fish Trap.

How To Get The Automated Trap
The Automated Trap can be acquired on the Anomaly. Summon the Anomaly and head to the Construction Research terminal behind Iterations Polo and Nada. You’ll need to spend one Salvaged Data to acquire the blueprints for the Automated Trap.
Once you have the blueprints, you can make as many Automated Traps as you want—provided you’ve got the materials, of course. Here’s what you need to create an Automated Fish Trap.

PostsHow To Use The Automated Trap
CloseUsing the Automated Trap is simple. Just head to the nearest body of water and construct the Automated Trap from the construction menu. You’ll need to place the trap over water deep enough for it to function.
Not all planets have water. Volcanic, Barren, and Scorched worlds often have little to no water, while Dead worlds are just lifeless rocks. Look for Lush, Paradise, Marshy, Tropical, or Frozen worlds for water.
Once the Automated Trap is placed, it will automatically catch up to four fish. The amount of time required to catch fish is random, but usually a few minutes per fish.
Using The Exo-Skiff
Although not strictly necessary to use the Automated Trap, the Exo-Skiff can be a helpful piece of technology to make harvesting fish a bit easier.
To acquire the Exo-Skiff, head to the Anomaly and speak with Iteration Selene at the Exosuit Research terminal. You’ll be able to purchase the blueprints for the Exo-Skiff from her for 90 Nanites.
The Exo-Skiff is a deployable technology that’s installed in your Exosuit’s technology inventory. To do so, you’ll need the following ingredients.
Exo-Skiff Recipe
- 120 Magnetised Ferrite
- 30 Salt
- 2 Crystal Sulphide
Crystal Sulphide can be obtained from hydrothermal vents typically found underwater.
To deploy the Exo-Skiff, go into your deployable Exocraft menu to select the Exo-Skiff. The Exo-Skiff can only be deployed on water. Make sure to place the Exo-Skiff near your Automated Traps to make harvesting your fish easier.
Tips For Using The Automated Fishing Trap
- The Automated Trap cannot have bait applied like the Fishing Rig can. This means that the quality of fish caught is generally poor, with A and S-class fish being a rarity. The Automated Trap is best used for quantity over quality.
- Try setting up multiple Automated Traps around the same location so you don't have to travel to collect your harvest.
- Similarly, if your base or settlement is near water, place your Automated Traps nearby to cut down on the travel time required to manage your base while still harvesting fish.
- Your Automated Traps can be easily spotted from orbit or on a planet’s surface by searching for the green fish symbol.
