Worry not, weary Travelers! There’s more than enough Rusted Metal in every galaxy in No Man’s Sky. And if you can’t find it in damaged containers or machinery, you can easily make it using a refiner too. Read on to discover every source of Rusted Metal in No Man’s Sky.

Rusted Metal From Damaged Containers Or Machinery

Close

The earliest likely encounter new travelers will have with Rusted Metal will come from damaged containers or damaged machinery. These damaged containers/machinery litter the surfaces of most planets and can be easily located using your visor.

To locate a damaged container, land on a planet and scan the surrounding terrain with your visor. Look for an icon labeled “cargo drop.” These cargo drops will typically contain a damaged container that will have between 50 to 100 Rusted Metal. The container will also contain a small amount of resources or a minor crafted component.

To locate damaged machinery, land on a planet and scan the surrounding terrain with your visor. Look for an icon labeled “damaged machinery.” Like cargo drops, these will contain between 50 to 100 Rusted Metal. Damaged machinery will also contain a small amount of nanites.

Rusted Metal shouldn't be confused with Tainted Metal, which is found on Derelict Freighters and given to Scrap Dealers on space stations for exclusive rewards.

How To Craft Rusted Metal

You can easily create Rusted Metal using Oxygen and Ferrite or Pure Ferrite. You'll need either a Personal Refiner Mk 2, a Medium Refiner, or a Large Refiner. The crafting recipes for Rusted Metal are below.

  • 1 Oxygen + 1 Ferrite = 1 Rusted Metal
  • 1 Oxygen + 1 Pure Ferrite = 2 Rusted Metal

Rusted Metal can also be refined into Ferrite Dust using a Portal or Personal Refiner.

  • 1 Rusted Metal = 2 Ferrite Dust

Crafting Rusted Metal is by far the fastest and easiest way of getting it. It requires easy-to-find resources and can be crafted in bulk.

Purchase Rusted Metal From Traders And Trade Terminals

You can sometimes purchase Rusted Metal from NPC pilots, traders, or Galactic Trade Terminals. The amount of Rusted Metal available from these sources will vary, but the price will usually be a very small amount of units.

Mining Rusted Metal From Dead Worlds

Rusted Metal can sometimes be found on Dead Worlds. These Dead Worlds will typically have no atmosphere, no flora or fauna, and will be described in your scanner as "Forsaken," "Dead," "Empty," "Desolate," "Low Atmosphere," "Airless," "Lifeless," "Abandoned," or "Terraforming Catastrophe."

On Dead Worlds, Rusted Metal will appear as a planetary resource deposit, similar to more valuable metals on other worlds such as Silver, Gold, or Chromatic Metal. Rusted Metal can then be extracted using your Terrain Manipulator.

You can also acquire Rusted Metal on Dead Worlds through the use of Mineral Extractors. The process for finding a mineral vein is the same as other resources and will require the creation of a base and the construction and placement of several Mineral Extractors.

Setting up a Mineral Extractor base will provide a long-term source of Rusted Metal, but it will take some time for Rusted Metal to be produced. For more information, see our mineral farming guide here.

Rusted Metal From Harmonic Camps

Rusted Metal can sometimes be found in the junk bins surrounding Autophage Harmonic Camps. These camps can sometimes contain a significant quantity of Rusted Metal, so if you're already searching for Autophage Camps to create your Voltaic Staff, be sure to check the area around these camps.

Rusted Metal is generally useless, but some supply quests for the Autophage will require Rusted Metal. In return, the player is awarded Void Motes which can be used to acquire Voltaic Staff components. What the Autophage do with this Rusted Metal is unknown, but, notably, most Autophage bodies contain rusted components.
