Gear Score is the most important stat for progression in Nightingale - most challenges are locked behind achieving a certain Gear Score, allowing you to progress the story and gain access to more Realm cards. You can reach level 20 gear score just by crafting a Sewing Bench in the early game, but to continue leveling your gear score you'll need to venture into new Realms and unlock new recipes.

PostsGear Score is demonstrated on your character inventory screen, and it is cumulatively scored based on your equipped items and whatever you are currently holding in your primary hand. That means all armor, tools, and weapons contribute to your overall gear score.
How To Increase Your Gear Score
Your Gear Score relies on your equipped armor and your main item in your hand. In terms of armor, an average is taken of your equipped pieces, which means it is possible to reach a higher gear score without crafting every item of a new tier.
To complete quests that require a higher gear score, you will need to hold your highest gear score axe, weapon, etc, to reach the next tier.
How To Unlock New Recipes
Armor, tool and weapon recipes can be unlocked via Essence Traders or by completing quests.
Advanced armor will require new crafting stations, also unlocked via Essence Traders. New Realms you explore (the new biomes) will have different recipes available for purchase with Essence Dust. These also progress in tiers (Tier 1, Tier 2, etc) as you move through the game.
Certain ores and other materials can only be gathered when using a tool of the appropriate gear score. This is demonstrated by the number next to the highlighted tool tip when you attempt to harvest a material, like an ore or gems.
