Summary
- The future of NetherRealm is not known, but two new job postings may point toward where the studio may be heading.
- According to the postings, NetherRealm is making a AAA game that could be on Unreal Engine 4 or 5.
- What's more, it'll have a story mode campaign and be a fighting game.
While we know that NetherRealm is hard at work on the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 expansion titled "Khaos Reigns," which will feature multiple new fighters, new story content, as well as the return of animalities, it's unclear what the future holds for the fighting game studio.
That said, two new job postings may point out exactly where NetherRealm may be heading. Hint: it'll have a story mode.
The Job Details Tell All The Truths
As first spotted on eXputer, a game forum website, Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm and Warner Bros. Games, has two new job postings available.
The first of which is for an Associate Producer at NetherRealm, with the listing noting, "This position is for an Associate Producer to be a part of the production team in the day-to-day management of a AAA title that NetherRealm Studios is working on."

Mortal Kombat often celebrates its history with action and horror icons, but gaming is part of that legacy too.
Posts 1The second, and more telling, position is for a Senior Animator, Cinematics. Whoever is hired will be part of a team "creating consistent, high-quality cinematic animation for our story mode campaign."
The listing notes, "We’re seeking someone with a strong knowledge of the principles of character motion and the 3D animation pipeline that can work with external partners to produce a high quality and engaging experience for our players." What's more, "Experience with Martial Arts/Fighting Games" and "Familiar with Unreal Engine 4/5" are also listed as qualifications.
Based off these postings, it's abundantly clear that it'll be a new fighting game that could potentially be on Unreal Engine 5. As it stands, Mortal Kombat 1 is on Unreal 4. And that it'll have a robust story mode, which is something that NetherRealm has put an emphasis on.
What isn't known, though, is what IP will be getting the fighting game treatment. Injustice is ripe for a sequel, and hasn't had a game since 2017. That said, Warner Bros. is ripe with many properties, and given how Mortal Kombat has made guest characters, particularly horror characters and movie icons DLC, then perhaps there's a full-scale crossover in the works.
Either way, it'll be interesting to see how things shake out in the coming months. Fighting games are no doubt getting a second wind, and NetherRealm is among the best at making the genre shine.
