Mortal Kombat 2 has been hyped up pretty extensively over the past couple of months, with Warner Bros. giving us a nice long trailer last month that featured our first look at Karl Urban's Johnny Cage. It looked to be in good shape going into its intended premier date of October 24 later this year, but the powers that be have now decided that it's not quite ready.

Yes, less than two months before Mortal Kombat 2 was set to hit the silver screen, it has been announced (thanks Deadline) that the movie has been delayed. It's a pretty substantial delay too, as Mortal Kombat 2 will now hit cinemas on May 15 next year, a whopping seven months after its initial release date.

Mortal Kombat 2 Has Been Delayed To Next Summer

Unfortunately, a reason for the delay has not been revealed, though Deadline suggests it could be due to a packed release schedule this October, along with the month itself not being a historically great one for the box office. I think that makes sense, though you have to question why Warner Bros. would have picked October in the first place if it knew it was a weak month for movies?

Also, you could make a strong argument that Mortal Kombat 2 now has even more competition in May 2026, with a new Star Wars movie called The Mandalorian and Grogu releasing just a week after Mortal Kombat 2's new date. Sure, you might attract more viewers in May, but now you're sharing screen time with Star Wars.

In any case, it's not a great look for Warner Bros. to be delaying a movie just two months before its intended release, and it does make you wonder if this means test screenings have actually been worse than is being made out. Those that have seen the movie have had positive things to say, while one of the movie's writers claimed there were fans "cheering and jumping out of their seats" in certain screenings. We'll have to wait another seven months to see if Warner Bros. has been fibbing.
