While the series is well-known for being a complete package with single-player options (and Mortal Kombat 1 is no exception), there might come a time when you will want to try your luck online. Playing online is a great part of what makes fighting games persist in time.

Mortal Kombat 1’s multiplayer has a variety of online modes for different tastes. Whether you want to approach it more casually or start climbing the ranked leaderboard, you’ll find something for you. However, all the options can be confusing at first, so we will explain them all in this guide.
Kasual Versus (Normal Matches)
If you want to fight without thinking about winning or losing points, Kasual Versus is where you want to go. Simply select the option and the matchmaking will find an opponent for you. Then you’ll select your character and your Kameo.
Please note that the other player could be of a very different rank and/or Profile Level than the ones you have.
After you finish a match, you can quickly rematch by selecting the first option in the results screen. You can rematch as many times as you want as long as the other player also wants to.
Here you can also find King of the Hill, a mode in which you will be in a group of up to eight players watching the first two in the list fight.
As the name suggests, the one who wins will be the King, and they will keep playing after they lose a fight.
Whenever you get to the end of a match, being a fighter or a spectator, you’ll be able to give from zero to ten Respect Points to the winner. These points don’t add any other reward to the game and you can’t turn them into currency — they are just for show.
Kombat League (Ranked Matches)
If you are ready to start showing your skills against other experienced Mortal Kombat 1 players and improve your playstyle, the Kombat League will be your preferred option. Here you’ll battle for points that will determine your rank.
Generally, fighting games use this mode to put you against players of “similar” skills. However, this doesn’t always work as expected, and it has been specially an issue in previous MK titles.
Just like the previous entry, MK 11, the ranks you can find are the following, ordered from the one with fewer points to the one with the most:
- Apprentice
- Kombatant
- Warrior
- Champion
- Master
- Grand Master
- Demi God
- God
- Elder God
Every rank will give you some reward, like a specific piece of Gear, Seasonal Kredits, profile banners, and profile backgrounds. Warrior, Grand Master, and Elder God will also give you a unique color palette for Fighters.
Both your battles in Kasual Versus and Kombat League will give you experience points for your Profile Level, Fighter Mastery Rank, and Kameo Rank.
There’s a currently locked option called “Warrior Shrine” that “will be available soon.” We’ll update this guide once we know what is this all about.
How To Play With Friends
Who doesn’t want to perform some sweet Fatal Blows against a friend’s character, showing them who is in charge? Of course, you can play Mortal Kombat 1 with friends in a variety of modes.
For offline modes, you can play Private Versus and Tournament. The latter is a mode in which there are specific rules related to competitions.
If your friends don’t live nearby or can get to your place, don’t worry. You can also play online Kasual Matches and even King of the Hill with them. You just need to enter the modes and a window will automatically pop up, asking you to invite users.
Does Mortal Kombat 1 Have Crossplay?
At the moment of writing this article, Mortal Kombat 1 doesn’t have crossplay. This means that you can’t play with friends or strangers that have the game on other platforms.
Fortunately, it was announced before launch that this is something that will be included in the game at some point.
We’ll update this guide once this happens.
