Mortal Kombat 1 is adding a new feature called kameos. These are essentially the tower modifiers of past games that you summon with the d-pad, only now they can add to kombos and even perform fatalities. So far, they've all been in-house characters, such as Sonya and Frost, but Brazillian retail chain Casas Bahia has revealed that we can expect guest fighters to appear as kameos as well.

"Kameo fighters are assist kharacters that appear when you press a button to give your opponent a blow," the page reads, as translated by Reddit user jamiegorevan. "Only a few are playable kharacters as well, which makes them more unique."

The page then lists the following:

  • "Kameo Fighters Exclusive Fatalities"
  • "Kameo Fighters DLC"
  • "Kameo Fighters Skins"
  • "Kameo Fighters Guest Kharacters"
  • "Active Part Of The Post-Launch Kampaign"

This means we might see complementary kameos to main DLC fighters, with some fans suggesting Invincible to pair with Omni-Man or Vigilante to go with Peacemaker, but it also confirms a few other details. For one, there will be a post-launch campaign, likely similar to MK11's Aftermath. It could also be tied into the story components of the Invasions board game mode, which we know will feature Hanzo's Scorpion travelling the multiverse to find a universe in which his family isn't killed.

This listing also confirms that most kameos will not make it to the main roster, and that there will be skins, letting us customise our partners. This is something fans already pieced together through screenshots that showed the same kameos with different outfits.

We don't know anything from this listing other than the fact there will be guest kameos, so they may not be tied to existing DLC. A commenter even suggested Chucky finally make an appearance. Given that he is a tiny doll, it never made much sense for him to be added to the series as a main character, but as a kameo, maybe NetherRealm can find room for the iconic slasher villain.

Others want to see the kameo system used to bring back old DLC fighters, like Jason Vorhees and Freddy Krueger. Rather than taking up a full slot on the roster, they'd occupy a new space they've never had before.

We'll have to wait and see who does get added in the end, but evidently, guest characters won't be limited to the main roster anymore, which means we might finally see Batman and Baraka fight side-by-side. Because that is definitely something fans have been asking about for years.
