Fed Up With Monster Hunter Wilds PC Performance, Fans Are Fixing It Themselves

Monster Hunter Wilds, despite its enormous success with a peak of over one million concurrent players, opened to mixed reviews on Steam due to its "atrocious performance".
Capcom's response did little to assure fans, as it claimed to have "polished [the] game as much as possible". Instead, it laid the responsibility on players, asking them to update their graphics drivers and readjust their settings.

At least most of the monsters in Wilds are brand new to the series, though.
Posts 3Without acknowledging the problem, the buck has now been passed to several modders who have taken it upon themselves to make the game run better on PC.
VANIILAcoffee's work promises "better stability" by removing post-processing effects, optimising CPU load, and tweaking GPU settings. CyberGecko1, meanwhile, released an update to reduce stuttering by setting the core count "appropriately". And velasquez3589 put together several presets for the tool 'DLSS Swapper' which seek to boost performance. Judging by the comments, these have all worked to varying degrees.
Why Is Monster Hunter Wilds Struggling On PC?
It's unclear what's causing these performance issues. Several mods have addressed the problem by removing effects like fog and film grain to make the game less taxing, while others adjust the CPU load by tweaking the thread limits to "reduce redundant calculations", but these are just bandaids plastered over an open wound.
Steam user BeepBoop found over the weekend that there's a typo in the game's configuration files, with "Resolution" being spelled "Resoltuion". Those who fixed the mistake claim that doing so improved performance, swearing that it might at least be part of the problem.
But the reality is likely far simpler than a typo - the game just isn't that well optimised. The writing was on the walls with the beta, which had similar performance issues, and we've had countless PC games over the last few years launch to similar backlash as they struggled to maintain a smooth, consistent framerate even on higher-end rigs, with major graphical glitches that transform NPCs into polygon Mr Potato Heads. Just look at The Last of Us Part 1. Hopefully, Capcom rolls out official fixes soon.
