In the Fallout TV series, it's revealed that Moldaver discovered a way to solve the world's desperate resource problem--cold fusion.

This infinite energy could have offered a peaceful resolution to the endless war for scraps plaguing the planet, but Vault-Tec bought all of the companies Moldaver was working for to ensure her research would never see the light of day, keeping the fight for literal power going so that the nuclear apocalypse would happen.

By the end of the series, Moldaver gets her hands on cold fusion tech and proves herself right after over 200 years, but the Brotherhood of Steel quickly sweeps in and takes it. However, this isn't the first mention of such technology in the series.

Cold Fusion Was Referenced In Fallout 4 Nearly Ten Years Ago

As pointed out by a Reddit user on the series' subreddit, there's a reference to cold fusion on an Institute terminal in Fallout 4.

Under the 'Research Proposals' tab, we can find a pitch to "Divert time/materials from current Phase Three research to exploring the possibility of sustainable nuclear reactions through electrochemical processes at or near room temperatures."

Dr Madison Li ultimately rejected the idea, calling it a "pipe dream", but we do get an interesting insight into what the history books say about cold fusion. We know now that Moldaver succeeded in creating infinite energy, only to be thwarted by a monopoly hellbent on global destruction. But as far as everyone else is concerned, "Pre-war work on the subject yielded no concrete results".
