Disney is trying to bury its head in the sand like Hei Hei about the live-action Moana remake, as it's now claiming that it's the "number one movie in the world" and "beloved by audiences worldwide".

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Disney has made some controversial and cash-grabbing decisions when it comes to its movies over the past few years, and easily the worst example of this is its live-action remakes. From The Lion King and Cinderella to The Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo, Disney has been going all in on lazily reviving and remaking many of its classic movies.

For some time, The Lion King seemed like the most egregious example of Disney's "live-action" remakes, but that all changed with the recent release of Moana, which literally does nothing new and even brings back Dwayne Johnson for the exact same role. Unsurprisingly, reviews have been very negative, but Disney is hoping that most people just won't pay attention to all of that.

Disney Says That The Moana Remake Is The "Number One Movie In The World", Despite Awful Reviews

Put Some Respect On Minions & Monsters' Name

Earlier this week, the official Disney Studios Twitter account shared an advert for Moana that claims that it's "beloved by audiences worldwide" and is now the "number one movie in the world". The original Moana is absolutely huge, so this would be easy to believe if it weren't for the awful critical reviews and reported box office numbers.

As we reported, Moana's reviews are somehow even worse than the panned live-action remake of Snow White. Early reports from Deadline have suggested that its box office results so far are "disappointing" and set to land in the "$42M-$46M range". Meanwhile, the actual number one movie in the world is Minions & Monsters, which has grossed more than $230 million already.

Disney's claim would be an outright lie if it weren't for the fact that Moana's Popcornmeter score is a surprising 90 percent, which does at least back up the "beloved by audiences worldwide" part.

It's not clear what Disney is trying to pull here beyond getting more people to go and see Moana, but Twitter is having none of it and has actively been calling out the claim for what it is. All of the top comments are pointing out the poor review scores and box office numbers, leading the post to go viral in the worst way and likely end up drawing more attention to how it's actually doing.
