Minecraft Dungeons is quite literally a dungeon crawler that takes place in the Minecraft universe. It's a simple premise, but one popular enough that it's getting a sequel, and a better look at that upcoming sequel has led to the original Dungeons becoming more popular than ever.

It's been rumored that Mojang has been working on Minecraft Dungeons 2 for a long time - artwork from the project that is now confirmed to be real leaked over a year ago. It wasn't confirmed to be real until earlier this year, and then the sequel got a beefy new trailer and a release date during last week's Xbox Games Showcase.

The Wait For Minecraft Dungeons 2 Leads To A New Lease On Life For The Original

The latest trailer for Minecraft Dungeons 2 appears to have tempted people back to the first game, or perhaps convinced regular Minecraft fans to try it for the first time while they wait for the sequel, as, on Steam at least, its player count has spiked. In fact, it has spiked multiple times, having broken its concurrent player record on Steam every single day since Sunday, the day on which the new trailer for Minecraft Dungeons 2 debuted (via SteamDB).

Before Sunday, Minecraft Dungeons' record player count on Steam was 4,022. That was set in May 2024 when the price of the game was cut to just $9.99 to celebrate Minecraft's 15th anniversary. That record was just about broken on Sunday when, at one point, 4,120 of you were playing Dungeons at the same time.

You'd think with the trailer debuting and the sequel on the way, that would be the highest peak Minecraft Dungeons ever hits, but no. The following day, Dungeons' concurrent player count peaked at 4,651. On Tuesday, it broke the 5,000-player barrier for the first time in its history.

Dungeons Almost Definitely Isn't Done

It has continued to set a new record every day this week, including today, when, as I type this, 6,268 people are playing Minecraft Dungeons on Steam, another new record. It's unlikely this is where the minecart stops. Dungeons has managed to keep breaking its own record on days when fewer people are usually on Steam. We're about to head into the weekend, which is when most games tend to really bring in more players as they don't have work or school.

There's also no telling just how high the Minecraft Dungeons peak truly is. Chances are there are even more people playing on consoles, particularly Xbox since Dungeons is available on Game Pass. The new trailer for Minecraft Dungeons 2 might not have been the most talked-about thing coming out of SGF week, but its big week on Steam, and potentially other platforms, will have reaffirmed to Mojang that a sequel to the spinoff was the right move.
