Originally launched in 1986 on Nintendo's Famicom Disk System, Metroid changed the formula of what an action/adventure game could be. The series was also one of the first instances where a female hero was a protagonist in a video game. The gameplay involves backtracking to find items and abilities to progress further within the map, often referred to as a Metroidvania.

Metroid: All Of Samus’ Suits (In Chronological Order)

We take a look at all Samus's suits, in the order they appear in the games.

Many of the abilities are gained through finding suit upgrades, which change the appearance of the bounty hunter, Samus Aran. Samus' mission is to exterminate an alien parasite known as the Metroid. Let's take a look at Samus' best suit designs throughout the Metroid series, which spans almost 40 years and more than ten games.

12 Power Suit

Close

Debuted in the first game, the Power Suit is included at the beginning of most of the following games in the series. It resembles Samus' trademark appearance in the Varia suit, except it looks less powerful due to a less armored design.

Created by the Chozo, a bird-like alien race, the Power Suit includes her base color pallet of red, yellow, and green. A good first impression to introduce the character, but the next suits offer a better design.

11 Justin Bailey Suit

Close

Another suit that debuted in the first game, the Justin Bailey suit was only accessed through the password system in the American version of the first Metroid game. If you did not beat the game at a certain time, this code would reveal Samus in a bikini suit, surprising everyone who was invested in this game.

The Justin Bailey suit comes from the password code, where you can take control of Samus in a unitard. Samus is seen with green hair when this password is triggered, as it signifies having the Varia Suit equipped.

10 Zero Suit

Close

The Zero Suit first appeared in a Remake of the first Metroid game, Zero Mission. In the post-game, we were able to dive into stealth game-play, as the Zero Suit doesn't come equipped with an arm cannon, instead opting for a stun blaster.

Every Planet Samus Has Blown Up In The Metroid Series

Samus sure likes to blow up planets, huh?

Posts

Samus' blonde ponytail, outfitted in a tight blue jumpsuit, has been one of the most iconic looks for her since its inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It compliments her quick movement but overall weaker firepower.

9 P.E.D Suit

Close

Introduced in Metroid Prime 3, the P.E.D Suit is one of the stronger suits as it can power-up all of Samus' attacks but with the loss of an energy tank.

The P.E.D Suit heavily resembles the Varia suit, but it has a dull and boring color pallet. The gun-metal gray in the center of the suit looks decent, but the arc reactor look-a-like chest piece throws off the whole suit as it feels thrown on. Not the worst design, but for a powerful suit, it could have made a better impression.

8 Fusion Suit

Close

Right after Super Metroid, Samus is injected with Metroid DNA due to a parasite X infection. She was almost killed in the process. Now parts of her suit are fused to her, creating a scrawny Marvel Symbiote look. This was a drastic change to her traditional appearance.

The majority of the Fusion suit is blue with some yellow peeking through. The suit takes some key designs from the Metroid DNA, like the three membranes on Samus' back, the sharp gauntlet, and visor.

7 Gravity Suit

Close

Usually the last suit upgrade to acquire in most games, the Gravity suit provides Samus with the best defense and traversal capabilities.

For most entries, the Gravity suit is a purple color swap for the Varia suit. There have been a few exceptions where this suit has added light accents, such as in Samus Returns or Dread.

6 Dread Power Suit

Close

A nice redesign for Samus' return in Metroid Dread. The Dread Power Suit takes the blue from fusion and mixes it with Samus' traditional Power suit. If you look close, the inner lining within the suit looks almost organic, showing the evolution of Fusion.

With each upgrade, the green lights on the chest plate grow longer and by the time it reaches its Gravity upgrade, the purple with green color scheme resembles the mecha from the anime series, Neon Genesis Evangelieon.

5 Dark Suit

Close

In Metroid Prime 2, Samus gets a new suit to combat the Dark Aether. Dark Aether is basically Phazon on a different planet, as it harms Samus if she gets near the atmosphere.

The Dark Suit has a dark brown, black, and red color scheme. It also has two giant shoulder pads that resemble a combination pad-lock. Despite having goofy shoulder pads, the darker color pallet is always welcome.

4 Varia Suit

Close

The box art suit in most entries, the Varia Suit has been the iconic look Samus is known for. The suit offers better defense and resistance to lava, allowing Samus to travel through it.

The first upgrade acquired, the suit is bulkier than the regular Power Suit and has about the same color scheme as the Power Suit. It keeps the red, yellow, and green, but it also adds more orange to the pallet. A very iconic appearance where Samus is almost always seen in the Metroid series and outside of it.

3 Light Suit

Close

The last upgrade is Metroid Prime 2's Dark Suit. The suit offers more resistance to the Dark Aether while providing Samus with more defense. The suit also lets her fast-travel.
