Just in time for Christmas, a Metal Gear Solid fan has created a mod for Snake Eater that brings snow, ugly sweaters, themed Codecs, and more to the game.

As a series, Metal Gear Solid is known for a lot of things. You're probably already picturing cardboard boxes, exclamation points appearing above enemy heads, and memory-card-reading boss battles, which says something about how much impact Metal Gear has had over the years. One thing Metal Gear Solid has never been, however, is a festive game - until now.

If you're looking to get Naked Snake into the holiday spirit, then look no further than Avaresst's Metal Gear Jolly mod for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, which Avaresst claims is their biggest mod yet. As the name implies, this mod brings some festivities to the third game in the series, adding in a bunch of Christmas goodness to a previously jungle-based mission.

The description for the delightful mod on Nexus Mods reads, "The evil colonel Volgrinch learned the location of the north pole and is about to ruin Christmas for everyone! you've got to stop him! This mod makes most of the environment snowy and festive, replaces a bunch of enemies, allies, codec sprites, and items here and there all to match a Christmas theme".

That's already a pretty impressive amount of changes for a mod, but taking a look at some of the screenshots shared for Metal Gear Jolly shows just how much a bit of Christmas spirit can change a game. Not only do Snake and a bunch of other characters wear ugly sweaters and Christmas colours, but the Codec conversations have also been jollied up by having whoever Snake calls wear a Santa hat when talking to him.

If this Metal Gear Solid 3 mod isn't enough holiday goodness for you, then the original Metal Gear Solid and its snow-covered sneaking should have you covered. Just chuck in some carols and eggnog and you'll be feeling the yule tidings.

Metal Gear Jolly also adds snow to most of the game's environments, making it a whole lot more Wintery. That's not all, though, as there are are a bunch of smaller details that really sell the vibe, like Snake's cigar having a candy cane theme to it, ammo boxes and other items being wrapped up like presents, and a new "ugly bandana" to go along with Snake's new outfit.

Metal Gear Solid may not have previously been a Christmas game, but this mod has me thinking that maybe it had the holiday spirit in it all along. Props to Avaresst for making one of the most impressive and heartfelt mods I've seen in quite some time.
