With the recent release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the fast-approaching launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the relevance of Nintendo's two biggest properties has never been higher. Both series have their own merits, Mario offering up bitesized levels full to the brim with color and creativity, while The Legend of Zelda gives Nintendo fans a huge, interesting world to explore and the tools to create their own adventures. Both are iconic for their own reasons, but that hasn't stopped fans from arguing over which is best.

In a thread on ResetEra titled "Let's Start a War: Mario Or Zelda?", fans have been invited to vote in a poll to see which of Nintendo's big guns comes out on top when pitted directly against each other. At the time of writing, the poll currently has almost 500 total votes, with the majority of those (62.9 percent) naming The Legend of Zelda as the superior franchise. Of course, expecting fans to simply vote and leave it at that was foolish, and many have taken to the comments to explain why Link or Mario is Nintendo's bestest boy.

We'll start with the Mario defenders since they're the underdog right now, although they seem to be unravelling a little bit. Mattmo831 calls on fellow Mario fans to stand strong in the fac of "recency bias", claiming hype for Tears of the Kingdom is unfairly affecting the poll. Falconhoof17 thinks that Mario's multiple spinoffs puts the Italian clear of Link and crew, while CHC says Links defenders will be sorry when their toilet starts to overflow and "Zelda doesn't know what do". A pretty convincing range of arguments right there.

Don't worry though, The Legend of Zelda fans have clapped back pretty hard. Lots of people say that they'd have gone with Mario too before the release of Breath of the Wild, claiming that it's a quality game that Mario has yet to match. MadLaughter explains that the Zelda series makes them feel "a whole SPECTRUM of emotions" while Mario only really elicit's joy, while Rndom Grenadez admits that Mario is more consistent in quality, but The Legend of Zelda series has a lot higher highs than Mario.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter which series is best, especially since both are getting plenty of love from Nintendo this year. Switch owners can simply sit back and be content with the fact that they have two incredible franchises to play on their console, as well as other great franchises like Kirby, which is objectively better than both of them.
