Summary

  • Lavinia, Foil To Conspiracy, is a Detective version of the character in the Clue Edition. She investigates Clue tokens and can tap to add mana.
  • Mastermind Plum is a Clue character turned Magic: The Gathering card. He attacks to exile cards and grants Treasure tokens, which can be used to draw cards.
  • Headliner Scarlett prevents players from blocking with their creatures. She also allows you to exile the top card of your library to surprise opponents.

It makes sense that the biggest murder case that Magic: The Gathering has ever seen has some crossover with the classic whodunit board game Clue (or Cludo depending on where you live).

The Magic: The Gathering Ravnica: Clue Edition is a special collaboration between the two tabletop games, complete with special legendary creatures, unique cards, and a whole new type of game to play. If you’re considering picking the Clue Edition up for your Commander decks, these are the best legendary creatures to build around from the game.

9 Lavinia, Foil To Conspiracy

Leave No Clue Uncovered

Lavinia is back in the Clue Edition with a brand-new Detective version. This iteration of Lavinia is all about making Clue tokens and then activating them, though with a small stipulation. When you cast your second spell on each turn, Lavinia investigates.

Then, you can tap her to add two colorless mana to your mana pool, which conveniently is just enough you need to sacrifice a Clue token. However, you can only use that ability on your opponent’s turn, which isn’t the worst, just means you’ll be drawing on your opponent’s turn from now on.

8 Mastermind Plum

Working From Behind The Scenes

The first of the Clue characters turned into Magic: The Gathering cards, Mastermind Plum has arrived to pull some strings to get his way. Anytime he attacks, you get to exile a card from a graveyard. If that card was an artifact, you get a Treasure token.

Then, if you cast a spell where mana from a Treasure token was spent to cast it, you draw a card and lose a life. Even if you don’t get a lot of opportunities to attack with Mastermind Plum, so long as you have a constant stream of Treasure tokens you can keep your hand full.

7 Headliner Scarlett

No Blocks Allowed

Attacking is the name of the game with Headliner Scarlett. This hasty creature shuts down a player’s ability to block with any of their creatures for a turn, leaving them wide open for you to swoop in with an army of attackers.

While a single use ability is a little limited, even one as good as Headliner Scarlett’s, is a bit weak, she comes with a second one to balance her out. At the start of your upkeep, you get to exile the top card of your library, hiding it from everyone else. You can look at and cast that card for that turn, letting you surprise your opponents with hidden information.

6 Amzu, Swarm's Hunger

Insects Give Away A Crime Scene

The second original Magic card from the Clue Edition is Amzu, Swarm’s Hunger, a unique Insect commander that makes use of graveyard shenanigans to build you an army. Right off the bat, Amzu takes your Insect creatures and gives them all menace, which already makes them a dangerous threat.

Then, any time one or more cards would leave your graveyard, you get to make a 1/1 Insect token, giving it +1/+1 counters equal to the greatest mana value from among the cards that were exiled, making it a powerful addition to any graveyard-based deck.

5 Apothecary White

Enough To Feed An Army

An interesting Food-based commander, Apothecary White turns your combat steps into a token generation machine. Anytime you attack, you get to create a Food token for each player being attacked, so up to three Food tokens.

Then, you can pay one white mana and tap Apothecary White while also tapping any number of Food cards you control to make that many 1/1 Human tokens. If you have any cards out that multiply the number of tokens you generate, you can quickly build an army out of Food tokens alone.

4 Lonis, Genetics Expert

Evolve To Solve The Case

A very strong commander to make use of your Clue tokens, Lonis, Genetics Expert has evolve, an interesting mechanic that adds a +1/+1 counter to it whenever a creature with a greater power or toughness enters the battlefield under your control. Every time you do, or if you add a +1/+1 counter to Lonis for any reason, you investigate equal to the number of counters going on him.

Lonis also distributes counters while he’s at it, giving another +1/+1 counter to another creature anytime you sacrifice a Clue. You can use this ability to manipulate your +1/+1 counter distribution, spreading counters across your board and drawing as many cards as you can.

3 Commander Mustard

A Soldier commander that puts others to shame, Commander Mustard is a slightly more expensive commander, sitting at five mana, but comes with a ton of abilities to abuse. Commander Mustard has a passive ability, giving your other Soldiers an impressive array of keywords, vigilance, trample, and haste, turning them all into threats.

As if that wasn’t enough, Commander Mustard then has an ability where you can pay four mana to give your Soldiers an added attack trigger. They will deal one damage to the defending player when they attack. Even better, you can activate this ability multiple times to give each Soldier you control multiple instances of this ability.

2 Senator Peacock

One of the more interesting legendary creatures to come from the Clue Edition game, Senator Peacock takes all your artifacts and turns them into Clues, giving them a new ability to let you pay two mana and sacrifice it to draw a card, like a regular Clue token.

Anytime you sacrifice a Clue, a creature of your choice cannot block this turn, which can be manipulated for your advantage. Lets say you have a bunch of Treasure tokens that are now considered Clues thanks to Senator Peacock. You can work with your opponents to shut down a shared enemies blockers by sacrificing your Treasure Clues at instant speed, leaving your opponent wide open for attacks.

1 Emissary Green

A very powerful legendary creature, Emissary Green puts a vote to the table when he attacks. Each player then votes for either profit or security. Depending on the results, you get to create Treasure tokens equal to twice the number of profit votes.

Then, all your creatures get +1/+1 counters equal to the total number of security votes, giving Emissary Green a boost in power as well as everything else you control. Either way, you’re winning in the end with Emissary Green, since you’ll end up with overwhelming power or the mana to cast your bigger spells.
