I’ve been a GTA fan since, quite literally, the very first title. I still clearly remember the day I first played it, if you’ll allow me a little yarn before we get into the meat of this article.

It was back in 1999, and I was still in primary school (grades 1-7 for our American friends). Computers were this crazy thing rich friends had, and the best we could possibly get at this point was still the good old NES.

But the school had recently purchased 12 brand-new, fancy computers, which were obviously very expensive. To help fund these new computers, they arranged an Entrepreneur’s Day, where anyone could sell anything (within reason, of course), on the school grounds.

The computers were featured in one of these ventures, offering a set amount of playtime for a set number of minutes. When I found this stall and had a look at the games, I saw some I recognized. Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem (did they even know about the strip clubs in Duke – we were only 10/11 at the time).

Anyway, after browsing the computers and seeing one particular title called Grand Theft Auto, my eyes widened. This guy was speeding around in stolen cars, shooting cops – you know, good, clean fun.

I purchased thirty minutes on one of the computers that had GTA installed, and three hours later, I had no money to buy food or drinks, but I didn’t regret a second of it.

The only GTA games I missed out on since were GTA 3 and Vice City, because we didn’t have a computer that could play them back then, nor did I have a PS2 (yet). I played all the other titles and was always a massive fan. Phew, okay, that was a long story, I’m sorry. Let’s get to the meat.

The Game I’m More Excited for than GTA 6

So yeah, GTA 6 looks amazing. But you know what it, weirdly, doesn’t hold a candle to, for me? Red Dead Redemption 2. My word, what a fantastic game that was. It’s one of my top five best stories in gaming, for sure.

But the world itself is also, obviously, stunning. Stepping back into a simpler time, taking a break from modern civilization – that’s where much of the magic lies, for me. You don’t have to follow the story to have a good time. Simply existing in the world is one of the most relaxing things I’ve done in the past few years (and I’ve sunk many hours into Stardew Valley, as well).

GTA titles have a different feel to them. They’re more action-oriented, with far less to do in the world than in RDR 2. I’m comparing, of course, GTA 5 to RDR2, because it’s the only baseline I’ve got.

So while GTA 6 will definitely be prettier and feature more activities than RDR 2 and GTA 5, I really wish they’d make RDR 3 first. If you haven’t played RDR 2, click off this page now, please. Come back when you have. Huge spoiler incoming.

Sure, Arthur is no longer with us, but John still has a story to tell, and Abigail sets up something similar to the dynamic between Jason and Lucia (once she warms up to “the life” a bit, of course). And Jack serves to make that story even more complex.

But then again, rumors say that RDR 3’s story will be set before the events of the first Red Dead Redemption game, so who knows what that looks like? Personally, I’m hoping we can purchase, cultivate, and profit from farms and ranches in that one. I’d love to play some Stardew Valley, but set in one of Rockstar’s worlds with bandits, lawmen, and, of course, the stellar cast from the RDR video games.

Maybe my hype for GTA 6 is also dampened a bit by the fact it won’t see a day-one PC release, as far as we can tell. It’s 2025, for goodness’ sake, make it happen, Rockstar! Not everyone wants to purchase yet another console we’ll hardly use just to get less than 60 fps.

But I’ve said my bit, and I hand the writing baton to you now, my dear reader. I know our site is ad-ridden, but it’s what pays the bills, so thank you for sticking around!

Please drop a comment below and let me know what you think about everything. Are you more hyped for GTA 6 or RDR 3? What other titles are you even more hyped for? The commenting system can be a bit iffy, and we are working on it, but I’d still love to hear from you, even if you just call me a heathen for liking RDR more than GTA!
