15,000 Vives were sold in the first 10 minutes at $800 a pop

Revenue of a cool $12 mil
Recommended VideosFor all the talk about how expensive virtual reality is, it hasn’t stopped people from spending their cash on it. The excitement is palpable, as Oculus quickly sold through its first Rift shipment last month. It seems as if the more expensive HTC Vive is doing just fine too.
The HTC Vive went on sale for pre-order this morning at a price point of $800. It didn’t sell out like the Oculus did (at time of writing, it’s still showing as available) but we have no idea what either company’s stock quantities were. What we do know is that 15,000 Vives were sold in the first 10 minutes. That’s according to Shen Ye, a product specialist at HTC.
At $800 each, that’s a quick $12 million revenue. That’s a good start. It’s not enough to make the device profitable. It’s not enough to prove that VR has mainstream potential. It’s not enough to be a success story. But, it’s a good start.
