While covering the action-adventure platformer Flying Hamster II last year, I said that fans of the Wonder Boy / Monster World series would want to take a look, and that’s even more true today.

The Kickstarter may have failed, but Game Atelier found a publisher to continue development. Now, the studio is back with a major update: Wonder Boy creator Ryuichi Nishizawa is on board, and the project has morphed into something more reminiscent of its inspiration — Monster Boy.

Most notably, the protagonist is no longer a hamster. Game Atelier has also updated its art style, and says “[w]hile the game still has a huge open-world, some of the environments have changed for fitting more with the Monster World universe.” Though, to be clear, Sega still owns that property. Hence “Monster Boy,” not “Wonder Boy.” Quick, Sega, look over there!

Flying Hamster II Kickstarter backers will get a free copy of Monster Boy when it’s finished. Nice.
