There’s an uncomfortable irony whenever a battle royale game is canceled. Within a genre that prioritizes survival above everything else, games themselves aren’t immune to dying off. It’s a dog-eat-dog world in every manner of speaking.

Alas, that lede means it’s time to say goodbye to another battle royale. Mavericks: Proving Grounds has been canned as developer Automaton Games has gone insolvent. Automaton says “Please be advised that due to insufficient funding, the development of the Mavericks: Proving Grounds game has now ceased.” A public beta was planned to take place in November.

Mavericks: Proving Grounds‘ claim to fame is that it’s literally bigger than all the other battle royales. It was advertised as a 400-player game, with plans to eventually raise the bar to 1,000 players. Eventually, it aimed for a persistent MMO-like world. But, that dream won’t be realized unless someone buys the rights and continues development. Mavericks: Proving Grounds shot for the moon, and landed not among stars but among a crippling mountain of financial liabilities.
