It was recently revealed that the 3G-enabled PlayStation Vita would have a download cap of 20MB when it launched in Japan, pretty much making it useless for anything worthwhile. In a recent interview, SCEA boss Jack Tretton said there were no plans to introduce it in the US … but it’s not that simple.

“That’s probably based on  the partner and the amount of data that they’re going to allow to be fed based on the plan,” Tretton told AZStar, while talking about the cap. “Unfortunately that’s a Japanese phenomenon. We don’t have any issues and/or announcements of limitations on our deal with AT&T.”

Sounds promising, right? Well, Sony called the publication soon after the interview was published and stated that Tretton is “not necessarily” correct. It stated there is nothing official to say either way on the matter.

That doesn’t mean a data cap is a definite on the US version, but having Sony publicly contradict Tretton after he implied there’d be no issues seems a bit unsettling. Hopefully it’s just Sony being super guarded. Not that I can think of a practical use for a 3G-enabled Vita in the first place.
