Rumors for the Wii U are a dime a dozen, and not all of them agree. The latest seems to go against the idea that it will be on par with current consoles from Sony and Microsoft, suggesting it will still be weaker than the competition.

“No, it’s not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360,” an anonymous developer told GI.biz. “The graphics are just not as powerful.”

Another developer agreed: “Yeah, that’s true. It doesn’t produce graphics as well as the PS3 or the 360. There aren’t as many shaders, it’s not as capable. Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can’t quite keep up.”

As with the Wii, Nintendo is going to try and sell the new system on the strength of its controller, not necessarily its horsepower. Whether it can make that lightning strike twice remains to be seen, however. I’m achingly curious to see how well the Wii U performs, and whether Nintendo can indeed repeat its Wii success. It’ll be enthralling to watch, I reckon.
