Leave it to Google to show the rest of the world how to properly pull an April Fools’ prank!
Launched earlier today, Google Maps has received an update with the help of Square Enix. If you visit the Maps page and click the “Quest” icon in the top-right corner, the entire map will be rendered as an NES-era, Dragon Quest overworld. Cities become 8-bit towns, major roads become dirt paths, and flag markers become little heroes. Even the Street View becomes a limited-color mess of pixels!
Granted, it’s nowhere near as awesome as the Famicom cartridge demonstration in the video above, but it’s still pretty damn awesome. Well played, Google! Well played!
Don’t forget to be on the lookout for Slimes and other such Easter eggs!
(Thanks to everyone who tipped this in! Seriously, this made my day!)
