Doritos Unlock Xbox finalist Harms Way will be released for free on Xbox Live Arcade next week. It’s creator, Justin Carpenter, wanted to mix Burnout with Call of Duty to have a game where both racing and shooting are required. And now, after a year in development alongside Bongfish, it’s ready to go.

Joystiq has a short interview with Carpenter. It’s there that he explains that the game went through a few changes, though his original idea is still intact.

“One of the biggest and most noticeable changes was the vehicles and the environment,” Carpenter told Joystiq. “It feels a little more like the Dirt series than Burnout. The shooting mechanics were simplified quite a bit too. They now feel a little more like the chopper gunner segments (from the kill streaks) in Modern Warfare than the normal gameplay.”

Whatever it’s like, it sounds awesome. You create a team: one racer and one shooter. Shooters sit in turrets picking off your opponents. The trailer explains it well. I want to be a racer. I suck at shooting, but I’m great at racing. Racing knowing that all eyes (and guns) are on you sounds like a blast (pun?). This sounds awesome for a free game.

When you download it next week, if you like it, be sure to vote for it at unlockxbox.com. The original 8 game submissions have been narrowed down to this game and one other.
