Curt Schilling's 38 Studios announces Kingdoms of Amalur

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling’s game development studio has been flying largely under the radar for the past four years, plugging away on its first project. Now we’re finally going to see where all that work has led them, as 38 Studios has officially announced the first title to come out of the company, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning which will be published by Electronic Arts.
There’s a lot of significant talent attached to this fantasy RPG. Image Comics founder Todd McFarlane is contributing art while the story is penned by legendary fantasy novelist, R.A. Salvatore. And with the whole project headed by the Morrowind and Oblivion lead designer, Ken Rolston, the potential is here for an epic title.
Schilling is well-known for his love of the fantasy MMO genre and it seemed likely that 38 Studios’ first title would be of that ilk. That Amalur is a single-player RPG experience surprises me, but putting one’s initial effort up against the likes of World of Warcraft seemed like a pretty bad idea.
A trailer will be debuting at Comic-Con tomorrow and a website for the game should go live shortly following that premiere. and I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more information come out in the near future. We’ll keep you posted.
