Idea Factory International has dropped a trailer – along with a release date – for the fun-looking retro-inspired shump Neptunia Shooter, which stars the heroes and villains of the popular Hyperdimension Neptunia series.

As you can see from the trailer below, the cutesy title recalls the classic horizontal shmups of the 1980s, as Noire, Compa, Vert and, of course, Nep-Nep herself battle through six stages of recognisable foes, gathering extra party members and power-ups along the way, all backed by a cute 8-bit score.

Okay, I don’t think Neptunia Shooter is set to bother anyone’s end-of-year lists, but it does look like a blast, a perfect game for those weird periods of procrastination when you aren’t quite sure what to play. For Neppu fans, it should scratch an itch whilst you wait on the delayed release of Super Neptunia RPG.

Neptunia Shooter launches worldwide on PC May 21.
