My patience finally pays off

I can barely recall a time when my Xbox 360 hard drive wasn’t full of games and DLC. It would’ve been before Rock Band, certainly. And the situation has only gotten more chaotic since Microsoft starting pumping out regular Games with Gold releases. That’s console life, I suppose.

It’s not exactly timely, but there is a new solution in the works: Microsoft will enable the use of external 2TB hard drives to store Xbox 360 data this year. In fact, if you’re signed up for the Xbox 360 Preview Program, you can test out this update out beginning today.

“In addition we will also no longer reserve space in advance on your hard drive,” writes Major Nelson. “If you are using 16GB of hard drive space for games — we will only take 16GB of space. And just like today — you will be able to use two external drives at a time.”

Considering I’m still inexplicably using an original 20GB drive, I’ll have to get in on this update.

Note: there are some known issues.

  • If you do not have an internal hard drive or memory unit for your Xbox 360, you may not be able to connect to Live using just external storage — please do not format your existing external storage devices at this time. This will be addressed in a future update.
  • Some drives may be incompatible or have performance issues.
  • If you already have space reserved for storing Xbox 360 data on your existing external hard drive, you will need to clear the storage to gain full access to the drive.
